Nancy Gathungu has been serving as the Auditor-General of Kenya since July 17, 2020. She succeeded Edward Ouko in this role and will serve a non-renewable eight-year term. A career auditor with over 27 years of experience in public sector auditing, she has held various positions in the Office of the Auditor-General, including Director of Quality Assurance and Head of IT Audit. She also previously worked as Chief Internal Auditor at Kenyatta National Hospital.
Ms. Gathungu holds a Bachelor’s degree in Commerce (Accounting) and a Master’s in Business Administration (Strategic Management) and is pursuing a Ph.D. in Strategic Management. She is a Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA) and a member of professional organizations such as the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya (ICPAK) and the Association of Women Accountants in Kenya (AWAK), where she mentors young accountants. In addition, she plays a prominent role in regional and international auditing organizations, including AFROSAI-E and the INTOSAI Development Initiative, focusing on capacity building and governance.
